Political Tension Rises After Falta Candidate Exits Contest
The All India Trinamool Congress on Tuesday clarified that the withdrawal of its Falta bypoll candidate Jahangir Khan from the re-election contest was his personal decision and not directed by the party. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday stated that Jahangir Khan’s decision to withdraw from the Falta re-election contest was made in his personal capacity and did not reflect an official decision of the party.
Jahangir Khan, who had been nominated by the TMC as its candidate for the Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas district, withdrew from the election race just hours before campaigning for the re-election was scheduled to conclude.
In an official statement, the party alleged that a climate of intimidation and pressure had developed in the constituency following the announcement of the West Bengal assembly election results on May 4.
The TMC claimed that political circumstances in the region had created difficulties for its candidate and supporters during the course of the campaign. However, the party did not elaborate on specific incidents linked to the alleged intimidation.
