Mamata Banerjee Visits EVM Strong Room in Kolkata Amid Tampering Concerns
Chief Minister inspects Bhabanipur counting centre despite heavy rain; Firhad Hakim also arrives at site
Mamata Banerjee, supremo of the All India Trinamool Congress, on Thursday visited the Sakhawat Memorial School in South Kolkata, which serves as the counting centre for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency. The premises currently house the strong room where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the April 29 polls are stored.
The Chief Minister’s sudden visit came amid suspicions of possible malpractice and alleged tampering of voting machines. Braving torrential rainfall in the city, Banerjee arrived at the centre in the evening and proceeded inside the strong room along with her election agent. She remained stationed inside the facility as of the latest reports.
Meanwhile, Firhad Hakim, Mayor of Kolkata and the party’s candidate from the Kolkata Port constituency, also reached the location. However, he was unable to meet Banerjee as she had already entered the secured strong room area.
The development has heightened political tension in the region ahead of the counting process, with the Trinamool Congress closely monitoring the situation.
