Leander Paes Backs PM Modi, Signals Stronger Political Role in BJP Ahead of Bengal Polls
Speaking on the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections in Kolkata, former Indian tennis star and BJP leader Leander Paes expressed strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he is committed to serving the country under Modi’s leadership.
Paes said that PM Modi’s leadership is “impeccable” and added that he is ready to take on any responsibility assigned by the party to strengthen West Bengal and the nation. He noted that during his discussions with the Prime Minister, they spoke about issues affecting Bengal, particularly youth empowerment through sports.
Highlighting his motivation for entering politics, Paes said many people avoid politics out of fear, but he was inspired by his father’s message to empower millions of children through sports and sports education. He emphasized that his commitment is rooted in national service and his desire to contribute meaningfully to India’s development through public life.
Paes added that his passion for India and the national flag continues to guide his efforts, and he pledged to work hard to support the BJP’s mission in the state.
