Electoral Data Shows Multi-Cornered Contests Shaped Bengal Election Results
A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms and West Bengal Election Watch has revealed that nearly 40 per cent of victorious candidates in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections secured wins despite receiving less than 50 per cent of votes polled in their constituencies.
A new report released by Association for Democratic Reforms and West Bengal Election Watch has highlighted significant trends from the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The report analysed results from 293 out of the 294 Assembly constituencies in the state, excluding Falta constituency. According to the findings, around 40 per cent of the winning candidates secured victory despite receiving less than half of the total votes polled in their respective constituencies.
The analysis stated that 118 candidates won with less than 50 per cent vote share, while 175 candidates, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the winners, secured more than 50 per cent of the votes cast.
The report further noted that the average vote share of winning candidates in the 2026 elections stood at 50.43 per cent, slightly higher than the 50.16 per cent average recorded during the 2021 Assembly elections.
Another major highlight of the report was the sharp rise in voter participation. According to the findings, voter turnout in the 2026 election reached 93.7 per cent, considerably higher than the 82.3 per cent turnout recorded in the previous Assembly polls held in 2021.
Election analysts believe that the data reflects the impact of multi-cornered electoral contests, where candidates can secure victories even without crossing the majority vote threshold due to vote division among opponents.
The report is expected to contribute to broader discussions on electoral representation, voting patterns, and the dynamics of competitive politics in West Bengal.
