Election Commission Begins Distribution of Voter info Slips for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal
The Election Commission of India has started distributing Voter Information Slips (VIS) for the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and the first phase of polling in West Bengal, scheduled for April 23. According to the Commission’s press note, the slips contain polling station details, date and time of voting, a polling station map snapshot, voter guidance instructions, and a QR code for quicker voter verification and reduced crowding at polling stations.
The VIS are being delivered door-to-door by Booth Level Officers and must reach voters at least five days before polling day. The Commission has also directed that slips be printed only in languages used in the electoral roll and has introduced Braille-enabled Accessible Voter Information Slips for visually impaired voters. The EC clarified that the VIS cannot be used as a standalone identity document for voting, and electors must carry one of the 12 approved identity proofs besides EPIC to cast their vote.
