The Bihar government has revised security arrangements for several political leaders, withdrawing the top-category Z-plus security cover provided to Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi.

According to officials, the decision was taken following a comprehensive review of security cover extended to VIPs across the state.

A notification issued late on Thursday stated that while the Z-plus category protection has been withdrawn, both former chief ministers will continue to receive security through the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP).

The review has also affected Tej Pratap Yadav, whose Y-category security cover has been withdrawn. Tej Pratap is the elder son of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi.

Officials have not publicly disclosed specific reasons behind the changes, stating only that the decision was part of a routine reassessment of security arrangements based on prevailing threat perceptions and administrative considerations.

VIP security categories in India are periodically reviewed by state and central agencies to ensure that protection levels correspond to current security assessments. Such reviews can result in the enhancement, continuation, or withdrawal of security cover depending on the recommendations of security agencies.

The decision is likely to draw political attention given the stature of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi in Bihar politics. Both remain influential figures in the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), one of the state’s major political parties.

There has been no immediate reaction from the RJD leadership regarding the withdrawal of the security cover.
