Jaishankar Launches Prosthetics Centre in Trinidad and Tobago
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday announced the launch of a permanent Prosthetics Centre in Penal, describing it as a people-centric initiative aimed at improving mobility and dignity for persons with disabilities.
The centre was inaugurated alongside Kamla Persad-Bissessar and follows the success of India’s Jaipur Foot assistance camp in the Caribbean nation, which reportedly benefited more than 800 differently-abled individuals.
In a social media post, Jaishankar said the facility would serve not only Trinidad and Tobago but also the wider CARICOM region.
The newly established centre is expected to provide prosthetic support, rehabilitation assistance, and mobility solutions to individuals requiring artificial limbs and related medical aid.
The Jaipur Foot initiative, internationally recognised for offering affordable prosthetic limbs, has been part of India’s humanitarian outreach efforts in several countries. The permanent centre is being viewed as an important milestone in strengthening India’s development partnership with Caribbean nations.
Officials said the project was completed within a short timeframe and reflects growing cooperation between India and Trinidad and Tobago in healthcare and social welfare sectors.
The initiative also highlights India’s continuing engagement with Caribbean countries through community-focused development programmes and medical assistance projects.
