The Indian Navy has received INS Mahendragiri, the sixth stealth frigate under the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), in Mumbai, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the delivery highlights major progress in indigenous warship design and construction. The vessel has been designed by the Warship Design Bureau and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai).

Project 17A frigates represent a generational leap in naval capabilities, featuring advanced stealth characteristics, enhanced survivability, and superior combat systems. The ships incorporate modern automation and cutting-edge technologies to improve operational efficiency and reduce crew workload.

Described as a “quantum leap” in naval design, Mahendragiri strengthens India’s maritime capabilities with improved firepower, stealth features, and resilience in combat scenarios.

The delivery is particularly significant as it marks the sixth P17A frigate handed over to the Indian Navy within a span of less than 17 months since the commissioning of the first vessel, INS Nilgiri.

The development underscores India’s growing focus on Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence production and its expanding capabilities in building world-class naval assets.
