Hormuz Concerns Trigger Renewed Focus on India’s Maritime Ecosystem

In a major push toward maritime self-reliance, the Government of India held a high-level inter-ministerial review meeting on the evolving situation around the Strait of Hormuz, with discussions shifting toward strengthening the country’s shipping capabilities.

The meeting was chaired by Sarbananda Sonowal and focused on building a robust and future-ready maritime ecosystem to enhance resilience in global trade and energy logistics.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, oil public sector undertakings, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, Directorate General of Shipping, National Shipping Board and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade participated in the meeting.

The review underlined India’s intent to reduce external vulnerabilities and strengthen domestic maritime infrastructure amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties affecting key global shipping lanes.
