West Bengal Extends School Summer Vacation Till May 31
Government Schools Across State to Reopen on June 1 Except in Hill Areas
The West Bengal School Education Department on Wednesday extended the ongoing summer vacation in all government schools across West Bengal till May 31 due to prevailing heatwave conditions.
According to an education department official, the decision will apply to primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions across the state, except schools located in hill regions where weather conditions remain comparatively cooler.
Under the revised schedule, the summer vacation, which began on May 11, will now continue for a total of 21 days. Schools are scheduled to reopen on June 1.
The extension comes amid intense heatwave conditions affecting several parts of eastern India, with authorities prioritising student safety and health concerns. Rising daytime temperatures and humidity levels have prompted governments in multiple states to review school timings and holiday schedules in recent weeks.
Officials said the state government will continue monitoring weather conditions and may issue further advisories if extreme temperatures persist.
The move has brought relief to students and parents, especially in districts experiencing severe summer heat and uncomfortable classroom conditions.
