Violence Breaks Out Between ABVP and DSO Near Calcutta University
Tensions flare after election results; rival student groups trade allegations over campus violence
Several students were injured following a clash between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Democratic Students’ Organisation (DSO) near the University of Calcutta campus at College Street, officials said on Tuesday.
The confrontation reportedly broke out soon after the declaration of the assembly election results on Monday, escalating tensions between the rival student groups.
DSO state secretary Biswajit Roy alleged that ABVP activists initiated the violence, claiming that DSO members were attacked while attempting to “protect the democratic atmosphere” on campus. He also accused ABVP supporters of tearing down banners and festoons.
The incident has heightened concerns over student safety and political tensions within university premises, with authorities expected to review the situation and take necessary measures to restore order.
