Kolkata Police has proposed bringing back personnel currently posted on deputation in various district police units to address a growing manpower shortage within the force, officials said on Sunday.

According to officials, the force is currently facing a significant number of vacancies in the ranks of sub-inspectors, constables and drivers, which has increased operational pressure on multiple departments, particularly the detective department responsible for maintaining law and order and handling investigations in Kolkata.

An official stated that the proposal has been submitted to the West Bengal Home Department as fresh recruitment of police personnel is a lengthy process and immediate staffing support is required to ensure smooth administrative and policing operations.

Authorities believe that recalling deputed personnel could provide temporary relief and strengthen policing capabilities in the city while long-term recruitment procedures continue.

The manpower crunch comes at a time when Kolkata Police is managing increasing administrative responsibilities, crime investigations, traffic management and public security arrangements in one of India’s largest metropolitan cities.

Officials have not yet disclosed the number of personnel likely to be recalled or the timeline for implementation of the proposal.
