Thunderstorms and Rainfall Predicted in Several Bengal Districts
The India Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms in several parts of West Bengal over the coming week due to favourable wind conditions and strong moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall is also expected in multiple sub-Himalayan districts between May 22 and May 24, raising the possibility of weather-related disruptions in northern parts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast thunderstorms in several districts of West Bengal over the next one week due to changing weather conditions and strong moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal.
According to the weather department, favourable wind patterns and significant moisture incursion are likely to trigger thunderstorm activity across north Bengal as well as some districts in southern parts of the state.
The IMD has specifically warned of heavy rainfall in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar from May 22 to May 24.
Meteorologists said the prevailing atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and intermittent rainfall in several regions.
Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation, especially in vulnerable hilly and low-lying areas where heavy rain could affect transportation and daily activities. Residents in the affected districts have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity.
The forecast comes amid seasonal weather fluctuations being observed across eastern India ahead of the southwest monsoon progression.
Weather experts noted that moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal often intensify pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity in eastern and northeastern states during this period.
