Student Groups Oppose Proposed The Bengal Files Screening on Jadavpur Campus
A proposed August 16 screening of filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files at Jadavpur University has triggered opposition from left-leaning student organisations, while the event’s organisers say they have university permission.
A proposed screening of filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s The Bengal Files at the Jadavpur University campus on August 16 has triggered opposition from left-leaning student organisations.
The Nationalist Students’ Front (NSF), a right-wing student organisation planning to organise the screening, claimed on Thursday that it had obtained permission from the university administration for the on-campus event.
However, a university official said that the administration has not yet taken a final decision on whether permission will be granted for the screening.
The differing claims have added uncertainty over the proposed event, with the organisers maintaining that the screening has been approved while the university administration says the matter is still under consideration.
The controversy comes amid political and student-level debate over the proposed screening of the film, which has attracted attention because of its portrayal of events associated with Bengal’.
