Railway Minister Promises Revamp of Kolkata Metro Over Next Five Years
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a major modernization drive for the Kolkata Metro, including the introduction of 60 next-generation trains over the next five years. The initiative forms part of a broader push to accelerate rail and metro infrastructure development in West Bengal under enhanced Centre-state cooperation.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday announced that 60 next-generation trains will be introduced for the Kolkata Metro over the next five years, marking a significant step toward modernizing India’s oldest metro network.
The announcement was made during a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna, where both leaders reviewed ongoing and proposed railway projects across the state. Vaishnaw expressed optimism that infrastructure development in West Bengal would gain fresh momentum under what he described as a “double-engine government” framework.
Highlighting the pace of metro expansion, the minister noted that only 28 kilometres of the Kolkata Metro network were completed during the first 42 years of its existence. In comparison, he said, approximately 45 kilometres of new metro lines have been added since Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014.
Vaishnaw also shared his experience of travelling on the Kolkata Metro and emphasized the government’s commitment to upgrading the system. The planned introduction of modern trains is expected to enhance passenger comfort, improve operational efficiency, and support the growing demand for urban public transportation in the metropolitan region.
The modernization initiative is part of a broader railway development strategy that includes network expansion, improved connectivity, and infrastructure upgrades across West Bengal. Officials believe the investment will help strengthen public transport services, reduce travel times, and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
With multiple metro and railway projects currently underway, the coming years are expected to witness significant changes in West Bengal’s transportation landscape, with Kolkata Metro emerging as a key beneficiary of the planned investments.
