Police Station Breach Sparks Major Law and Order Crisis in Bengal
Kolkata / Jagatdal Assembly Constituency: Police said a serious law and order situation unfolded on the night of April 26 after a retired police officer and contesting candidate visited Jagatdal Police Station around 11 PM to lodge an FIR.
According to police, supporters of an opposing candidate learned of the visit, after which a mob of nearly 200 people gathered and unlawfully entered the police station premises.
Officials said another contesting candidate later reached the spot to rescue the candidate, following which the mob allegedly turned more aggressive. Both individuals reportedly managed to leave the police station with the help of their supporters.
Police further stated that the mob later attacked the residence of another candidate using explosives, firearms, and stone pelting.
During the violence, personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces were also targeted, resulting in injuries to a Central Industrial Security Force constable.
Following raids at multiple locations in coordination with the Barrackpore police commissionerate, four people were arrested — Koushik Das, Sikander Prasad, Gopal Routh and Shyamdev Shaw.
Police said other accused persons have absconded and raids are continuing to arrest individuals including Firoz and Munjal Rajak.
