Metro Tunneling Work Paused Near Bowbazar Due to ‘Soil Subsidence’

KOLKATA: Residents of central Kolkata’s Bowbazar are back on edge as KMRCL authorities reportedly paused tunneling work following minor “soil subsidence” in the area. While officials have labeled it a “precautionary measure,” memories of the 2019 and 2022 building collapses have led to panic among local shopkeepers and homeowners.

The East-West Metro corridor, a lifeline for the city, has faced multiple delays in this particular stretch due to the fragile nature of the soil. Structural engineers are currently conducting a “vibration audit” of the century-old buildings in the vicinity.

The local traders’ association has threatened to launch a protest if a permanent safety guarantee is not provided.  The administration is monitoring the cracks in at least three buildings on Durga Pithuri Lane, with emergency evacuation teams standing by.
