A homeless man has been arrested in Kolkata for allegedly killing his five-month-old daughter and disposing of the infant’s body in a roadside dustbin, police officials said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Debojit Jana, also known as Piklu Jana, was taken into custody on Friday night after local residents apprehended him near a Shiv temple in the jurisdiction of the Maidan police station area.

According to investigators, the case surfaced after the accused’s wife, Kajol Jana, 18, broke down in front of people near the temple and accused her husband of brutally assaulting and strangling their infant daughter to death last Sunday.

Police said locals immediately informed authorities after hearing the woman’s allegations. Officers reached the spot and detained the accused for questioning before formally arresting him.

Preliminary investigations suggest the couple had been living in difficult conditions on the streets in central Kolkata. Authorities are now trying to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the child’s death and recover further evidence connected to the case.
