Election 2026: Ratna Debnath Files Nomination; Vows ‘Justice for Abhaya’
PANIHATI: In a move that has electrified the North 24 Parganas political landscape, Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar victim, officially filed her nomination as the BJP candidate for the Panihati seat. Accompanied by former Union Minister Smriti Irani, Debnath’s walk to the nomination center was attended by thousands of supporters.
The “Justice for Abhaya” movement has now officially entered the ballot box, as Debnath took a solemn vow to not comb her hair until the perpetrators of her daughter’s murder are brought to final justice.
Smriti Irani launched a scathing attack on the TMC government, labeling the nomination as a fight for the “safety and dignity of Bengal’s daughters.” Political analysts suggest that the Panihati contest is no longer just about local issues but has become a referendum on the state’s handling of the RG Kar tragedy.
The TMC has responded by emphasizing its administrative measures, but the emotional surge in Panihati poses a significant challenge to the ruling party in this urban bastion.
