Petrol and diesel prices were increased again across the country on Saturday, with rates rising by 87-91 paise per litre, taking the cumulative hike in retail fuel prices to nearly ₹5 per litre within less than 10 days.

At the same time, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices were also raised by ₹1 per kilogram, marking the third upward revision in recent days and taking the total increase in CNG rates to ₹4 per kg.

According to industry sources, the latest revision saw petrol prices rise by 87 paise per litre and diesel prices increase by as much as 91 paise across different regions of the country. State-owned oil marketing companies have attributed the repeated hikes to soaring international crude oil prices, rising import costs, tightening refining margins, and currency pressures caused by a weaker rupee.

The recent surge in global energy prices has been linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and volatility in international oil markets, which have significantly impacted fuel import costs for India.

The increase in petrol, diesel, and CNG prices is expected to have a wider economic impact by raising transportation and logistics costs, potentially contributing to inflationary pressures across several sectors. Consumers and businesses dependent on fuel-intensive operations are likely to face additional financial strain if global energy prices continue to remain elevated.
