Chief Minister Warns Against Middlemen in Public Healthcare System
Expressing concern over complaints regarding the alleged “broker raj” in state-run hospitals, Suvendu Adhikari on Friday instructed officials to initiate strict action against those involved.
The directive was issued during a meeting attended by senior officials of the Health Department, principals and superintendents of major government hospitals, and senior doctors holding administrative responsibilities.
During the meeting, the chief minister also raised concerns over alleged irregularities in patient referrals and directed authorities to implement measures to improve transparency and accountability within the healthcare system.
Officials said the government has asked hospitals to strengthen admission procedures, expand patient-handling capacity, and ensure that referrals are made through proper medical protocols rather than through unauthorised intermediaries.
The issue of middlemen or brokers allegedly influencing admissions, referrals, and medical services at public hospitals has frequently drawn criticism from patients and civil society groups in the state.
The chief minister emphasised the need to restore public confidence in government healthcare institutions and ensure that patients receive timely treatment without facing exploitation or unofficial intervention.
Health department officials were also reportedly instructed to monitor hospital functioning more closely and take disciplinary action wherever irregularities are detected.
The move is expected to lead to tighter oversight and administrative reforms in state-run hospitals across West Bengal.
