Calcutta High Court Reassigns RG Kar Rape-Murder Matter
The Calcutta High Court has assigned the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case to a new division bench comprising Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh after two judges earlier recused themselves from hearing the matter.
The Calcutta High Court will now hear the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case before a division bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh.
The reassignment comes after Justice Raja Shekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay recused themselves from the case on May 11.
In January 2025, Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in the case, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The case continues to be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has sought the death penalty for Roy, while the convict has pleaded for his release.
Meanwhile, the victim’s parents have approached the court seeking a fresh investigation into certain aspects of the case.
According to the plea filed before a court in Kolkata’s Sealdah area, the parents have requested action against former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, and the then officer-in-charge of Ghola Police Station.
The victim’s family alleged that the accused individuals obstructed a second post-mortem examination and hurried the cremation process without following proper procedures.
The case had sparked nationwide outrage and widespread protests, with demands for justice, transparency, and stronger safety measures for medical professionals.
