Super Typhoon Sinlaku Batters Northern Mariana Islands

Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the strongest tropical cyclone recorded globally this year, struck the U.S. Northern Mariana Islands with devastating force, bringing destructive winds and torrential rain to the region.

The Category 5-equivalent storm made landfall over Saipan and Tinian with sustained winds of nearly 240 kmph, while nearby Guam also faced severe weather, including flash flooding and strong gusts.

Emergency response operations have been hampered by hazardous conditions, with officials warning that dangerous winds will persist even as the storm gradually weakens. U.S. President Donald Trump approved emergency disaster declarations for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands ahead of the storm, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency deployed nearly 100 personnel to coordinate relief and recovery efforts.
