Nearly half of the adult population in Meghalaya above the age of 15 consumes tobacco in smoked or smokeless forms, while close to 8,000 people die annually due to tobacco-related diseases, a senior health official said on Monday.

Speaking during the launch of the World No Tobacco Day 2026 campaign, State Nodal Officer of the National Tobacco Control Programme, Dr Nabaneeta D Mawrie, described the situation as a major public health challenge requiring urgent intervention.

She warned that tobacco addiction was increasingly affecting young people and communities across the state, stressing the need for stronger awareness campaigns and preventive action.

“Tobacco is not just a habit, it is a trap carefully designed to addict our youth and communities,” Mawrie said while addressing the gathering.

Health officials expressed concern over the widespread use of both smoking and smokeless tobacco products in Meghalaya, noting that the habit contributes significantly to serious illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, respiratory disorders, and stroke.

The World No Tobacco Day campaign aims to strengthen public awareness, encourage tobacco cessation, and promote healthier lifestyles, especially among younger populations vulnerable to addiction.

Authorities also highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts involving schools, healthcare workers, community organisations, and law enforcement agencies to reduce tobacco consumption and prevent new users from taking up the habit.
