Balasore Faces Renewed Flood Risk Amid Heavy Rainfall Forecast
Fresh rainfall has heightened flood concerns in Odisha, with the Jalaka River crossing the danger level in Balasore district and inundating low-lying areas. Authorities have intensified monitoring and preparedness as the IMD forecasts more rain, thunderstorms and lightning over the coming days.
Fresh spells of heavy rainfall have renewed flood concerns in Odisha, even as relief and restoration efforts continue in areas affected by the recent floods. The situation is particularly critical in Balasore district, where rising water levels in the Jalaka River have caused fresh inundation in low-lying regions. State authorities and disaster management agencies have stepped up monitoring and preparedness measures in vulnerable areas.
According to officials, the Jalaka River has crossed the danger mark at Mathani, reaching 6.56 metres, above the danger level of 6.50 metres. The overflowing river has inundated agricultural land in Basta and surrounding areas. Authorities are keeping a close watch on vulnerable embankments and have made arrangements for evacuation if the situation worsens
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across Odisha over the next five days. An Orange Warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, while several other districts remain under Yellow Warnings. The weather agency has also indicated that a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 12, which could further influence weather conditions in the region. Meanwhile, the state government has released ₹110 crore as preliminary assistance for 22 flood-affected districts to support relief and rehabilitation efforts.
