‘The Elephant in the Fog’ Creates History for Nepal at Cannes

The team of Nepali feature film The Elephant in the Fog received a warm reception at Tribhuvan International Airport after returning from France with the prestigious Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2026.

The cast and crew of The Elephant in the Fog returned to Kathmandu on Monday after making history at the Cannes Film Festival 2026 by winning the prestigious Jury Award under the Un Certain Regard category.

The team was warmly welcomed at Tribhuvan International Airport by government officials, film industry representatives and supporters celebrating the film’s historic achievement.

Bikram Timalsina, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, and Khadka Raj Paudel extended felicitations to the film team during a special reception ceremony. The programme was jointly organised by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Nepal Film Development Board.

Directed by Abinash Bikram Shah, the film became the first Nepali feature ever to be selected for and win an award at the Cannes Film Festival, marking a landmark moment for Nepal’s film industry.

The Un Certain Regard section of Cannes is known for recognising emerging filmmakers and distinctive cinematic voices from around the world. The achievement has been widely celebrated in Nepal as a breakthrough for the country’s presence on the global cinema stage.

The film’s success is expected to bring greater international attention to Nepali cinema and encourage more independent filmmakers from the region to participate in global film festivals.
