Social Media Debate Erupts Over ‘Cocktail 2’ Song Similarity
Music composer Pritam has rejected allegations that the song Mashooqa from the upcoming film Cocktail 2 was plagiarised from an Italian track released in 1993. The controversy gained attention on social media after users compared the tune with a Neapolitan song by Italian duo Bibi and Coco.
Music composer Pritam has responded to plagiarism allegations surrounding the song Mashooqa from the upcoming film Cocktail 2.
The controversy emerged after a Reddit user shared a comparison video juxtaposing Mashooqa with Se So Arrubate A Nonna, a track by Italian duo Bibi and Coco from their 1993 album Le Origini Vol. 2. Several social media users claimed that the melodies of the two songs sounded strikingly similar.
Reacting to the criticism, Pritam addressed the issue through a post on his Instagram Stories, where he sarcastically referred to the critics as his “unpaid PR team”. The composer did not directly acknowledge the plagiarism claims but appeared to dismiss the allegations and the online debate surrounding the song.
The issue has once again sparked discussions on originality and inspiration in film music, particularly in the era of rapid social media scrutiny where audiences frequently compare new releases with older international tracks.
Pritam, one of Bollywood’s most commercially successful composers, has previously faced similar plagiarism accusations during his long career, though he has also delivered several widely acclaimed soundtracks and chart-topping songs.
