Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali on Tuesday clarified his recent viral remarks concerning Deepika Padukone and her casting in the 2012 film Cocktail, saying the comments were made in a light-hearted spirit and should not be misunderstood.

Ali’s earlier remarks had triggered controversy online and sparked discussions across social media platforms. In response, the director shared a clarification message emphasising his long-standing friendship and admiration for the actor.

Addressing Deepika directly, Ali wrote that she has always been his “pal” and “safe option for humour,” adding that she understands how deeply he respects and appreciates her.

The filmmaker also said he did not want to take any risk with their friendship by allowing his comments to be misinterpreted publicly.

Cocktail, directed by Homi Adajania, is often regarded as a turning point in Deepika Padukone’s acting career, particularly for her portrayal of Veronica, which received widespread critical acclaim.

Imtiaz Ali and Deepika Padukone have collaborated on several successful films, including Love Aaj Kal and Tamasha, and are known to share a strong professional and personal rapport within the film industry.
