Police in Agartala have arrested two people and recovered nearly all the stolen gold ornaments worth around Rs 20 lakh in connection with a theft reported outside a nursing home, officials said.

According to Debaprasad Roy, the incident took place between 9.30 pm and 10 pm on Friday night when the victim, identified as Raju Shah, had visited a patient admitted to a nursing home along with his wife and child.

Police said the family had kept gold ornaments inside the storage box of their auto-rickshaw while they were inside the nursing home. Upon returning, they discovered that the box had been broken open and the valuables stolen.

A complaint was immediately lodged at the West Agartala Police Station, following which a special investigation team was formed to track down the culprits.

During the investigation, police identified two suspects — Shamim Miyan and Prarthana — and conducted raids at their residences. Officials said the operation led to the recovery of almost all the stolen ornaments and the arrest of both accused.

Preliminary interrogation reportedly revealed the involvement of additional members of the gang. Police said efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the remaining suspects connected to the theft.
