Security Breach Exposed After Court Finds No Release Orders
Police re-arrest 12 inmates; SIT formed to probe forged release orders
A major lapse has come to light in Lunglei, where 16 convicts were released from the district jail over the past few months based on forged documents.
The irregularity went unnoticed initially and surfaced only recently when authorities discovered discrepancies in judicial records. Officials at the district and sessions court were unable to trace any valid orders authorising the release of the inmates, raising suspicion of document forgery.
Following the revelation, police launched an operation and have so far apprehended 12 of the released convicts. Efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining individuals.
Authorities have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, including how forged documents were created, verified, and acted upon within the prison system.
The case has raised serious concerns about administrative oversight and document verification processes within the correctional system, with further action expected based on the investigation findings.
