Strait of Hormuz Transit Fees Could Impact Shipping Costs

Iran has announced that it has collected its first payment from a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran said the fee has been deposited into the Central Bank of Iran and described the charge as compensation for damage caused by recent military actions by the United States and Israel in the region.

Iranian authorities have not officially disclosed the exact amount collected. However, shipping industry sources estimate that large oil tankers could face charges of up to one million US dollars for each transit through the waterway.

The development is likely to raise concerns in global shipping and energy markets, as the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for oil and gas transportation.

Any increase in transit costs through the passage could have wider implications for freight rates, insurance premiums, and global crude prices.
