India Wins Five Medals at Asia-Oceania Ultramarathon Championships
India scripted a historic performance at the International Association of Ultrarunners 24-Hour Asia and Oceania Championships in Japan by winning five medals, highlighted by a gold medal from Amar Singh Devanda and a silver from Geeno Antony in the men’s event.
India delivered a landmark performance at the International Association of Ultrarunners 24-Hour Asia and Oceania Championships held in Hirosaki, winning a total of five medals and registering one of its finest achievements in ultrarunning.
Amar Singh Devanda clinched the gold medal in the men’s individual category after covering an extraordinary distance of 282.881 kilometres within 24 hours. Fellow Indian runner Geeno Antony secured the silver medal with a distance of 272.894 kilometres. India also earned the bronze medal in the men’s team category.
In the women’s competition, the Indian team claimed bronze after covering a combined distance of 667.722 kilometres. Tenzin Dolma narrowly missed an individual podium finish and ended fourth overall.
The championship witnessed participation from 81 athletes representing nine countries across Asia and Oceania, making India’s achievement particularly significant on the continental stage.
Ultrarunning events test extreme endurance and mental resilience, with athletes competing continuously over extended durations and distances. India’s strong showing is being viewed as a major milestone for the country’s growing presence in endurance sports.
The performance is expected to boost the profile of ultrarunning in India and inspire greater participation in long-distance endurance athletics.
