In a high-octane encounter that kept the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on its toes until the final overs, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off a sensational five-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday night. Chasing a formidable target of 210, the Kings displayed nerves of steel to hand the five-time champions their second consecutive defeat of the 2026 season, marking a rare breach of the “Chepauk Fortress.”

Sent into bat first, CSK overcame an early setback—the cheap dismissal of Sanju Samson for 7—to post a massive 209/5. The star of the first innings was 18-year-old sensation Ayush Mhatre, who played an innings of immense maturity. Mhatre’s blistering 73 off 43 balls (including 6 fours and 5 sixes) anchored a 96-run partnership with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (28).

As the middle order stuttered, Shivam Dube provided the finishing fireworks with a sluggish start turned explosive, finishing on an unbeaten 45 off 27 balls. A cheeky late cameo by Sarfaraz Khan (32 off 12) ensured CSK plundered 64 runs in the final five overs, setting what seemed to be a match-winning total.

The chase began with a whirlwind as PBKS opener Priyansh Arya redefined aggression in the Powerplay. Arya, later named Player of the Match, smashed 39 runs off just 11 deliveries, including an incredible sequence of five boundaries in the first six balls he faced. Along with Prabhsimran Singh (43 off 34), Arya propelled Punjab to 61/1 in just 4.2 overs, effectively killing the required run rate early on.

While the openers provided the spark, it was skipper Shreyas Iyer who ensured the fire didn’t burn out. Coming in at number four, Iyer played a captain’s knock, scoring his 20th IPL fifty off just 29 balls. His innings was a masterclass in calculated aggression, particularly against the CSK spinners. Despite a late wobble where Iyer and Nehal Wadhera fell in successive deliveries to Anshul Kamboj, the experienced Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh kept their composure to cross the finish line with 8 balls to spare.

The loss leaves CSK searching for answers in their bowling department, as Matt Henry (2/54) and Kamboj (2/43) proved expensive on a night where the dew factor was surprisingly minimal. For Punjab, this victory cements their status as the tournament’s “chase masters,” having now completed their ninth successful 200+ run chase in IPL history.
